Mesothelioma Awareness Month: Support, Advocacy, and Hope
Devin Golden | September 16, 2025
Every September, communities across the country pause to recognize Mesothelioma Awareness Month, with September 26 marked as Mesothelioma Awareness Day — a tradition started in 2004 and formalized by the U.S. Congress in 2010 as a national observance.
This observance offers a solemn yet hopeful reminder of the profound toll mesothelioma takes, the need for broader awareness, and the power of collective advocacy.
The Impact of Awareness
Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive cancer linked to asbestos exposure — often diagnosed decades after exposure. Raising awareness helps families recognize symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing or chest pain sooner. Awareness also fuels research — especially vital as mesothelioma research to develop new treatment approaches remains underfunded compared to more common cancers like lung cancer and pancreatic cancer — and drives advocacy for private and policy-level change to ban asbestos for good.
Honoring Patients and Caregivers
Behind each mesothelioma case is a story of resilience — and often, a silent struggle. Patients face physical hardship and emotional upheaval; caregivers often step into demanding roles — providing medical care, emotional support, and advocacy. This month is a moment to thank and uplift these unsung heroes.
Awareness in Action: From Blue Lights to Proclamations
Want to do more than just read and reflect? Here are tangible ways to amplify your support:
- Light the World Blue – Since 2020, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation has rallied communities worldwide to illuminate landmarks in blue on September 26 in solidarity and remembrance.
- Request a Proclamation – Many communities now officially recognize September 26 as Mesothelioma Awareness Day. You can help make your town one of them by petitioning local leaders.
- Share Awareness Infographics – Organizations such as Mesothelioma Guide offer well-designed infographics and online resources — covering symptoms, treatment and support — that are easy to share across social media platforms to educate others.
BCBH Law: Advocates for Patients and Families
Mesothelioma is almost always tied to negligent asbestos exposure — through occupations like construction, manufacturing, or military service. Families need justice and financial relief.
At BCBH Law, we stand for more than just legal counsel — we stand for care. We offer:
- Empathy-first guidance – Listening before advising, we understand the emotional costs just as keenly as the legal ones.
- Proven experience – With deep experience in asbestos-related litigation, we know how to seek the compensation our clients deserve.
- Focused advocacy – Handling the legal complexities so families can focus on healing, not paperwork.
Legal action isn’t just a case — it’s a step towards hope, and a way to honor courageous patients.
Moving Forward with Purpose
Mesothelioma Awareness Month is about action — education, advocacy, compassion, and community. By sharing stories, lighting landmarks, petitioning officials, and supporting legal and medical efforts, we push for prevention and progress.
At BCBH Law, we’re honored to be part of this vital journey. To all patients fighting, caregivers loving, and advocates striving for change, you are seen, supported, and never alone.
If you or a loved one is impacted by mesothelioma, BCBH Law is here — to listen, to advocate, and to help you fight for justice.
